Bude is situated on the Atlantic Heritage Coast of Cornwall, adjacent to fine sandy beaches and on the South West Coastal Path. It is a small seaside resort town in North Cornwall, at the mouth of the River Neet that has been welcoming visitors since Victorian times. It is friendly and unspoilt with a lovely, laid-back atmosphere.
Today the town has become famous for surfing and fabulous beaches. There are safe beach breaks, rocky points and secret reefs in the Bude area and it is this variety that makes it such a brilliant surfing destination – there really is something for everybody. The water is clean, water temperatures are relatively high (thanks to the Gulf Stream), and the surf is consistent.
Summerleaze and Crooklets are the two beaches in the town - with excellent broad sands and a west facing seafront the Atlantic rollers make for good surfing when conditions are right. Summerleaze Beach is one of the few spots along the North Devon and North Cornwall coast that’s protected from prevailing South Westerly winds. Even on days when gales are blowing, beginners can surf small, clean, waves. There can often be surfing waves here when everywhere else is flat. Crooklets Beach is a large bay, surrounded by gently shelving cliffs and rocks. A Blue Flag Beach, Crooklets is popular amongst local surfers and families alike. Home to the Bude Surf Life Saving Club, it offers some fast but fun waves at low tide and provides great mid to high tide conditions in small swells. Facilities include a large car park, beach huts, Cafés and Bude town centre is only a short walk away.
Widemouth Bay is a few miles south of the town and offers a long, wide sandy beach and Sandymouth, owned by the National Trust, has spectacular cliffs and rock formations with shingle and a large expanse of sand at low tide.
Bude and the surrounding area have impressive coastal scenery and with a few minutes walk from the town centre you can be exploring the dramatic scenery of the South West Coastal Path, or discovering the famous Bude Canal.
The town has excellent facilities with plenty of good pubs, clubs and shops. There is a large Sainsburys supermarket and recreational activities including a modern indoor heated swimming pool. The annual Bude Festival takes place on the 3rd Saturday in August and the Bude Jazz Festival on the August Bank Holiday.
